We started working on the project last wednesday, with Noreen introducing ‘peace work’ in a very enjoyable way using movement. We got some very interesting hand photos from that.
On Friday I showed some of my own work to the students and introduced the idea to develop the work as we go along, starting off with a series of experiments.
I am a bit overwhelmed by the 35 min lessons, the bell just seems to be going off the whole time, it really doesn’ t leave a lot of time for discussion.
For me this means getting used to a completely different way of working. That will be interesting.
I want to find a way how the students can get involved in an engaged creative process. I am not sure yet how this can happen in these short bits and pieces.

We started working on the project last week. We learned about peace by dancing and working together. In art we drew portraits of each other, just focusing on the face and not looking at the drawing. We found it really hard not to peep at the drawing. In S. p. h. E. we had to organize ourselves in order of our birthdays. we had to communicate and listen to each other.
In art and music we listened to the song ‘ripples in the rockpool’, and did drawings from what we listened to.http://voices.kidsown.ie/wp-content/uploads/2006/11/seanstills.thumbnail.jpg

We listened to music and drew what we heard.
In S. P. H. E. we did a game, in which we had to organize ourselves according to our birthdays. Then we wrote down how we organized ourselves.

This is the first week of the project and I was introduced to the students and made a presentation to them from my laptop. We looked at pictures of my own paintings and constructions and then at various workshop techniques I have used with school and community groups including model making and junk sculpture. This led to a screening of clips from some of my recent animations and documentary films. The children were very interested and asked some good questions. Later Noreen and Orla presented a screening of the Imagine video and then we did a workshop exploring some of the key words we had identified as of importance in achieving Peace and Reconciliation. We then planned some music and physical exercise work for next week.
