Tuesday was Evaluation and Show and Tell day at the Model Arts Centre with Phil and Anna from Mercy College, Noreen and Orla from Kids Own and Myrtle and Laurence from Devenish College. It was great to see the work Mercy were doing and show our own work and have some feedback. We planned some developments for the project and heard that we are working towards an exhibition in the Clinton Centre in June 2007, an exciting prospect for us all. Wednesday saw all of us in Devenish prepare for an Open Day to showcase our artwork for parents, media, pupils and staff on Thursday. We prepared the school foyer and the classroom to show off the artwork and project the DVD of our video and documentary work to date. On Thursday all of the pupils and staff in the school came in turns to see the exhibition and watch the DVD. Feedback was tremendous and all of the class were really proud of their achievements to date.

This week we thought about adding text to our artworks. We discussed key words that would sum up our themes including Reflection, Reconciliation, Acknowledgement, Recognition, Suffering, Conflict, Obstacles, Inclusive, Commitment, Peace, Contemplation, Remembering, Tolerance, Respect, Commemoration. We cut out letters in metallic card and sprayed metallic paint. We also wrote words using glue sequins and glitter. In the music session we rehearsed and then performed a basic samba rhythmn which Colin recorded for sampling and editing in Garageband. We also edited more of the presentation for next week. It looks and sounds great.

well we are still on a production line with the cut outs, the insides of the heads, which got wildly covered in glitter this week. Somehow everything is taking a lot longer then expected, I am still struggling with the 35 min system. the sound animation is nearly finished with sounds from the music group and bits and pieces about Grace O’ Malley.
The music group started to make up songs with the cards from history, using garage band to compose the music. In sphe we discussed the jaki irvine exhibition which we had visited last week. Really interesting points got raised, about trust, relationships, being wild and having to be trained, what has protection to do with friendship, time, being hurt, healing, what has to be done to rebuild trust,……
all the thoughts were finally put down on cards.
Something interesting has happened around the portraits which I am drawing in the studio, the students have started to write and draw around them. I really like to continue this process.

we firstly finished our cut outs putting glitter on them and sticking stuff on it. We then put it on the computer and blew it up on a piece of paper, then we drew over it and cut it out. Then we got them alltogether and hang them up on a piece of string and stuck it up so it would hang.
In the morning in Sphe we were talking about the birds exhibition. We talked how the birds trusted the people. We wrote down all the words that reminded us of them. Then we got a card and we wrote sentences about them and decorated them.

This week we added to our sculptural orchestra by making bass drums and bodhrans. We stretched ripstop nylon skins over the cardboard bodies and stapled them tight. We then made drumsticks and tried them out. They sounded awesome. We then decorated them with reflective paints and thought about graphic texts we could add to explore our themes of reconciliation and imagining peace. Mathew got onto the internet to research celtic patterns for his bodhran. We also discussed drum rhythmns we could try to learn and record with celebration and carnival as a focus.

We finally finished painting and decorating our musical sculptures and put them aside to dry. They look really cool and we cant wait to play them and exhibit them. Our whole school is very excited at the moment with our festive play now nearing completion and a number of our class miss the sessions due to their involvement in the play, but everyone covers for them and we have finished their work too. It all looks great. We also took an opportunity to view all our downloaded and trimmed video clips and photos. We experimented with some video effects including the mirror filter and the fast/slow filter. They were fun and made us all laugh at some of the strange things that happened. We decided to do some sessions using the data projector so that everyone could get a chance to try editing some clips and puttting special effects on them with the rest of the group looking on for feedback.

On Monday I showed some slides of artists who work with installation, especially Annette Messager and Gerda Steiner. We discussed what installation means and how the different artists work. There were quite a few parallels between the artists work and the work we’ ve been doing. I think a lot of the students have ideas now of how to develop the work further and what kind of experiments we could do.
In the music class we discussed the story of Grainne O’Malley, which is the basis of the ripples song. Most students weren’t really that interested in her, but after finding out more they thought there were a few exiting things about her, that she was a pirat, she was very powerfull, had her own ship,… we recorded the conversation and will use it for the sound animation.
The highlight of the week was visiting Jaki Irvine’s show at the Model Gallery. I thought it would be really beneficial to see the show in relation to our overall theme of imagining peace. Â In this video installation Jaki Irvine portrayes in very simple ways how these people manage to establish trusting relationships with birds of prey, who have been injured and hurt. It is fascinating to see the closeness of the people and these really dangerous birds, both linked in calmness and respectful acceptance. Sometimes they copy each other, they follow each others eyes, they mock each other,..
I’d like to use the observations from this show for our next S.P.H.E. lesson to work on the subject of trust after being hurt.
We also started to compose music with garageband, using the cards from geography and history for text. I think we might use this music with the slides from P.E. to create some mixed pickles of all the things arising during one schoolday.

Trisha:
This week we went to an exhibition. We looked at different types of birds. A lot of them were injured. The birds trusted their minders so they let them hold them. One of the birds was an owl, it would only go to his owner.I think most of the class liked it. We also finished our heads and projected parts of them on the wall and drew them big. We are making parts of our heads look real.
katie:
On Monday we drew around our heads and put all the things we like inside them, like music, art and clothes. The heads are looking interesting and colourfull. We also looked at pictures from different artists.
On Wednesday we went to an exhibition in the Niland Gallery. The exhibition was about videos showing the relationship between people and birds. It showed how the birds trusted the people. There was great peace between them. The birds were not chained or caged. They were free to go wherever they wanted, but they stayed with the people because they trusted them.
